Density
Overview
Density is a fundamental physical property that describes the ratio of mass to volume, indicating how much mass is contained within a given space. In research, quality control, and industrial production, precise density measurement is essential – whether for identifying materials, verifying their composition, or detecting deviations at an early stage.
A proven device for accurate density determination is the pycnometer. It is ideally suited for measuring the density of liquids and operates on a simple yet highly precise principle: First, the empty pycnometer is weighed. It is then filled with the test liquid to a defined volume and weighed again.
The density is calculated from the difference in mass between the filled and empty pycnometer and the known filling volume. This method delivers reliable results and is widely used in laboratories, quality assurance, and educational settings.
